Personal Knowledge Bases for Teaching

Technology has transformed all aspects of our lives, including what it means to be informed, knowledgeable, and creative. A Personal Knowledge Base (PKB) using the “cloud” application Evernote can be used to accumulate resources related to science, science teaching and other topics of your choosing. Your PKB is an online repository for articles, notes, references, and reflections, and is meant to extend your intelligence and creativity. Since everyone thinks in his or her own way, our PKBs should also be different. Your PKB reflection should describe:

  • your organizational scheme for your notebooks.
  • the extent of your current PKB
    • types of content?
    • topics? School related? Non school related?
    • number of notes? (there is no minimum number)

  • at least one learning or planning strategy that you have used that uses your PKB to augment your current thinking or prepare for student teaching.
  • questions or difficulties that you still have trying to use Evernote professionally.

  • I don't really have an organizational scheme for my notebooks. I usually create a new notebook for each topic and give each note its own name.
  • All of the material in my Evernote is science-education related. It is all school related. I have 157 notes total if I count all of the notes I did not create in notebooks that are shared with me.
  • I have found that Evernote makes it very easy to access files on my PC or iPad without having to constantly email them to myself.
  • I have trouble finding the motivation to develop and implement an organizational strategy. I am also fearful of putting all of my documents in the cloud.
